April 10, 2015 Rural School and Community Trust Honors Rural Teachers Washington, DC: Susan Tate and Terri Reid have been awarded a Rural Teacher Global Fellowship sponsored by the Rural School and Community Trust. The goal of fellowship is to create unique personal and professional development experiences for rural teachers. Fellows design their own international fellowship experience, learning goals for themselves and their students, and anticipated benefits for their school and community. According to Doris Terry Williams, Executive Director of the Rural School and Community Trust, “This program enriches the personal and professional growth of rural teachers by recognizing and supporting them as they identify and pursue opportunities around the globe that will have the greatest impact on their practice, the academic lives of their students and on their school communities.” Funded by an anonymous donor, the program is in its fourth year and will continue as a flagship initiative of the Rural School and Community Trust’s Rural Teacher Development Center. Our mission is to help rural schools and communities grow better together. Working in some of the poorest, most challenging places, the Rural Trust involves young people in learning linked to their communities, improves the quality of teaching and school leadership, and advocates in a variety of ways for appropriate state educational policies, including the key issue of equitable and adequate funding for rural schools. Their task was to include at least 10 historic facts to teach the class. I continue to hope for our Rural Trust grant to Iceland where I can bring back my experience to share and inspire my sturdent during this lesson for the beginning of our Canada History Unit!
We are two middle school teachers, Susan and Terri, working toward a fellowship experience traveling to Iceland to learn more about Environmental place-based education. We are applying for funding and have reached out to Landvernd, Iceland's Environmental Agency, through a Skype meeting earlier this week. We met two wonderful associates who would be happy to help us learn more about Iceland's Eco Schools and their projects involving soil restoration and sustainable tourism in their fragile geothermal areas.
